Chapter 11.B

From 1624

In the previous section I list largely unconnected entres for BRUSH and its variants in the period from 1537 to 1622.  In this section we begin to develop a bit more of a storyline.

Coming from the Country?

STANTON HARCOURT NOTES: Adam has three sons, Philip, Thomas and Richard born around the opening years of the 17th century - around 1601 -1603 of whom we know a little and four more of whom we know only their baptism. Thomas and Richard go to London as apprentices in 1615 and 1616. We will meet them again later. Marriages in 1624 and 1626 ? Perfect ?? Adam married in 1630?

In 1624 we read in the register of All Hallows the Less of Thomas BRUSH [L29(4)] , a clothworker, Margaret HARRIS [L29a(4)] and their son John [Lxx(5)] . [not sure if birth or marriage comes first - check old style/new style] . There is a further baptism of Hannah, daughter of Thomas and Margaret BRUSH at St Mary Abchurch in 1628. In 1629 Lydia, daughter of Thomas BRUSH, is buried at St Mary Abchurch.

We believe Thomas to be one of the sons of Adam of Stanton Harcourt in Oxfordshire, just to the west of Oxford. Adam had at least three sons, Philip, Thomas and Richard born around the opening years of the 17th century - around 1601 -1603 of whom we know a little and four more of whom we know only their baptism. Notes elsewhere say Thomas and Richard go to London as apprentices in 1615 and 1616 but I cannot locate the record for this.

Hannah Brush marries twice and in 1659, as Hannah BLAKE, makes her will which includes the passage:

"…and for want such issue unto Isaack Brush sonne of Edward Brush and his heires for ever Item I make and constitute my deare and honoured father Thomas Brush Citizen and Clothworker of London…my Executor..".

Thomas also witnesses the will.

Marriages in 1624 and 1626 ? Perfect ?? Adam married in 1630?

The identification of her father is clear. He would at that time have been around 76. There is no explanation of the relationship to Isaack or of why he is selected for the residual bequest. He would seem to be Isaac, the son of Edward the glazier and Quaker activist and Sarah, who was baptised in 1650, but that makes him a child when the will is made. Hannah had at one time had a brother John but there is no obvious sign of a marriage or offspring for him so maybe he had died? It seems likely that Edward could have been her uncle - making Isaac her first cousin.

(1) back to text    The numbering system is the same as used elsewhere but I have left multiple gaps in the sequence in the hope that some gaps may in time be filled. The generation numbers cannot be matched directly with family groups elsewhere but are all approximations using 1500 as a baseline for generation (1) adding 30 years for each generation.

(2) back to text    The typed list says it is extracted from Vol 2 of Thos. Allen's "History of London, Westminster & Southwark" 1837 where it is stated that the original list is in the Chapter House, Westminster. It is available in Ancestry.

(3) back to text    There is one reference in a list of court cases transcribed by the University of Houston to Bruche, William, of London, merchant tailor suing Massy, Robert, of Egerley, Cheshire, gent for debt in 1537. And one to another Bruch entry ? But there is a separate chapter on the Bruche family of Cheshire. Also an unsupported note added onto an earlier draft of Jone BRUSH burial 1547

(4) back to text    According to the Ancestry collection of London, England, Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812 there is a burial of George Brush on 17 June 1585 ( the index incorrectly shows 17th May) at St Saviour, Denmark Park, Surrey ( which is apparently St Saviour Southwark). I can't read the entry as Brush though; I'm glad others can.

(5) back to text    I have not been able to find any reference to Joc as a name - it is not one of the regularly used Latin forms.
